Sweden - Uppsala, June '03. So all the bikes in Uppsala (and several other European places ... particularly schools) had these locks that were just a locking bar that went in between the spokes on the back tire. Pretty effective. You end up looking rather suspicious walking a bike around on just the front tire to steal it. Then again, in the Summer it's never dark enough to even pee outside with modesty (brazen attempts only) so I imagine theft goes way the hell down. Hmm ... then again ... everyone is so friendly in Uppsala that you could probably just steal anything as long as you did it with a smile. Anyway, so that style of bike lock is pretty cool as long as you don't park your bicycle overnight anywhere near a river or train tracks. Every once in a while, a drunken band of reincarnated Vikings picks up dozens of bikes parked along the river and tosses them in. Much later, the city fishes them all out and puts them in a grim rusty pile outside of town.
